A Georgian writing desk: crimson leather books, a folded letter sealed in oxblood wax, a quill in a brass stand, a candlestick, a small terrestrial globe, dried roses.

The films
are free.
The work is not.

the case

Four to six months in the archive for each film. Reading rooms in three cities. A conservator on retainer. A small team paid honestly for slow, careful work.

By Another Hand is published outside the documentary commissioning system on purpose. There is no broadcaster's note we must answer to, no advertiser to please, no algorithm to flatter. The trade-off is that the work is paid for by its readers. Patronage is what keeps the channel under seal.

frequently asked

A few small matters

Will the films stay free to watch?
Yes — always, on the channel. Patronage funds the work behind them; it does not gate them.
Can I cancel at any time?
Of course. A single click. We will, naturally, be sorry to see you go, but the door is unbolted.
Do you accept institutional patronage?
We do. Libraries, history departments, and private archives have written before. Please send a letter to the editors.
